I read in the newspaper yesterday about our dear old Woolies closing down after all those years of being a household name. There are a few bloggers today also talking about them too and so my memory has been jolted about Woolies.
As a teenager my first Saturday job was in Woolworth. I was delighted to be working in their flagship store too....Oxford street. At the time there were 2 stores on Oxford street. One was opposite what is known as the Pantheon branch of Marks and Spencer and the other was opposite John Lewis. I worked in the branch opposite John Lewis. How I loved working there! I worked on the pick and mix counter. What a great place to work. I would go downstairs to the stores and it was like being Alice in Wonderland surrounded with all those sweets. Of course I had to sample these sweets. Y'know, make sure they were fit for human comsumption.
During the school holidays we would get to work in different departments. I remember once having to work upstairs in the canteen. That didn't last long as I kept dropping everything and mostly over the customers. I was a little clumsy back then
I even got to work in the offices and loved that but not as much as the sweet counter.
Ah, those were the days eh!

good old Wollies,

as a child I loved the shop, every thing was sixpence, my favourite silver coin
Every friday coming home from college I would buy a long slim box of matchmakers to munch with the usually Friday scrabble night with my MUM.
what a sad day!
